What does a ribbon blender do?
A ribbon blender blends suitable powders and granules with ribbons inside a horizontal trough. In double-ribbon designs, inner and outer ribbons circulate material in different directions. Its purpose is to distribute ingredients, not to serve as a mill.
Convert weight to volume using bulk density
Bulk density is material mass per unit volume, including the spaces between particles. It is not particle density. The first estimate is: batch volume (m³) = batch mass (kg) / bulk density (kg/m³). The density used must represent loading conditions.
Consider two entirely hypothetical formulations. Formulation A weighs 300 kg and has a bulk density of 600 kg/m³: it occupies 0.50 m³, or 500 litres. Formulation B also weighs 300 kg but has a density of 400 kg/m³: it needs 0.75 m³, or 750 litres. Although both weigh 300 kg, B occupies 50% more volume. These are calculation examples, not İnovate model ratings or material reference values.
Instead of requesting only a “300 kg blender”, include the formulation and measured density. Calculate each formulation separately when several products are planned; allowable loading must be checked as well as volume.
Distinguish total trough volume from working volume
Total volume describes the trough’s geometric volume. Working volume describes the product volume to be mixed under specified conditions. Do not equate them; ask the manufacturer for minimum and maximum batch limits.
A machine with a total volume of 500 litres is not automatically suitable for the 500-litre batch above. The quotation must identify whether 500 litres means total or usable working volume. Include small trial batches in this review. Rather than applying one filling percentage found online to every design, have the permitted range confirmed for your formulation.
How should material suitability be assessed?
Differences in ingredient particle size and density affect mixing results. Homogeneity means that the selected component reaches the required distribution in the samples tested; appearance alone does not establish it. Request representative product trials and a defined sampling plan.
Hourly output is not just mixing time
A batch is the quantity processed at once; a cycle is the total time needed to prepare and discharge it. Hourly output planning must include loading, mixing, discharge and necessary cleaning or waiting time.
Example: the same batch, different hourly output
In another hypothetical example, loading 300 kg takes 5 minutes, mixing 10, discharge 5 and preparation for the next batch 10. The total is 30 minutes, giving a theoretical output of 300 × 60 / 30 = 600 kg/hour. Using only the 10-minute mixing time gives 1,800 kg/hour and ignores the other stages. This is not a performance promise: actual results depend on product trials, downtime and line conditions.
Check the production schedule to see whether preparation takes the same time for every batch. Cleaning between different formulations may need a different allowance from successive batches of one formulation. If a screw conveyor is planned for feeding or discharge, assess its connection and transfer time together with the blender.
What information is needed before a quotation?
Provide minimum, normal and maximum batch sizes, bulk density, operating temperature and product-contact surface requirements. Include material safety information and known process risks. Mark unknown values as unknown rather than presenting guesses as facts.

Safety and the limits of this guide
During cleaning and maintenance, authorised personnel must follow the manufacturer’s instructions and the site’s energy-isolation and lockout procedures to prevent unexpected movement. This article is not an operating instruction.
No specific İnovate capacity, motor rating, certification or sector suitability is claimed here. Final selection requires technical assessment of the material and process data.
